Supporting Organ Donation Week 2024

Published: 23 Sep 2024 07:00

The Gorleston Pavilion Trust is shining a light on the importance of organ donation by turning the Pavilion Theatre in Gorleston pink this September, in unison with other landmark buildings across the borough of Great Yarmouth, including the iconic Town Hall.

Councils, businesses, hospitals and community groups across the country are joining together for Organ Donation Week by turning their buildings pink, to encourage people to confirm their support for organ donation by adding their name and decision to the NHS Organ Donor Register on its 30th birthday!

Every day someone in the UK dies waiting for a transplant, due to a shortage of people donating. Right now, there are around 7,000 people waiting for a transplant. However, as only 1,400 people die in circumstances where organ donation is possible, every donation is precious and can make such a difference.

As the NHS Organ Donor Register turns 30, it’s just as important as ever to add your name and decision, because families are more likely to support the decision of someone who has done so. It only takes 2 minutes, and you could go on to save up to nine lives.

Gorleston Pavilion Trust Chief Executive Alex Youngs said: “The Pavilion Theatre has always looked great when lit up and it always captures the interest and imagination of passers by when lit in a specific colour.

“Sadly, many opportunities are lost every year in the borough and around the country because families don’t know if their loved one wanted to be a donor or not.”

Anthony Clarkson, Director of Organ and Tissue Donation and Transplantation for NHS Blood and Transplant said: “It’s brilliant of Gorleston Pavilion Trust and buildings across the borough of Great Yarmouth to show its support for Organ Donation Week in the year of the NHS Organ Donor Register’s 30th birthday. The modern organ donor card is pink, and it certainly gets conversations going.

“We need people in Great Yarmouth to add their name and decision to the NHS Organ Donor Register. This could be the difference between life and death for someone else.”
